Global neurodegenerative disease research funding has seen a substantial improvement, with funding being up by a third since 2011, according to a new survey.
As of today (17 July), funders and researchers are able to access a database that contains survey information from across three-decades worth of global neurodegenerative disease research funding.
This new online database was coordinated by a founder member of the programme, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and follows a smaller-scale survey completed in 2011.
It is a result of a large-scale mapping exercise of neurodegenerative disease research investments and infrastructure across Europe, Australia and Canada – all member countries of the EU Joint Programme for Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND).
What did the survey reveal?
Spanning over 28 years, from 2002 to 2030, the survey’s database indexes over 3,000 projects and resources. It revealed that since 2011 neurodegenerative research spending has increased by 34% across JPND from €370 million up to €494 million.
According to a report of the survey on the MRC website, the aim of this resource is to share funding information, promote new collaborations and inform strategy, which will ultimately support scientific progress in the area of neurodegenerative disease.
What can be explored in the database?
Once accessed, visitors can explore the database to find out about the type of research that has been funded, as well as look at profiles of past and current investments by multiple funders or within specific countries.
In order to increase the global reach of the data, the database will also be displayed in the International Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias Research Portfolio (IADRP) database.
